ATARI: Starting games with the HATARI-Emulator

The ATARI emulator HATARI is amazingly compatible when it comes to games. Although the ATARI did not have as many games as the AMIGA or the C64  back then, some gems still made it onto the ATARI. All you need to play with the HATARI is a gamepad, as this is recognized by the emulation and can be used in games!

Setting the screen on the HATARI

Almost all games run either in “ST Medium” or “ST Low” mode, i.e. in color. The ATARI generates up to 512 colors, but can only display up to 16 colors simultaneously. The resolution is also, let's put it this way, modest.

>>  ST-MEDIUM

  • Resolution: 640 × 200 Pixel
  • Colors: 4 Colors simultaneously from a range of 512

>>  ST-Gering (Low Resolution)

  • Resolution: 320 × 200 Pixel
  • Colors: 16 Colors simultaneously from a range of 512

>>  ST-Hoch (High Resolution) Modus:

  • Resolution: 640 × 400 Pixel
  • Colors: 2 Colors  (monochrome, only with a monochrome monitor)

But even with 16 colors, amazing games could be created and some of them are still cult today! Start your HATARI and press

==> F12 ==> ATARI Screen ==> RGB

Before you restart the HATARI now: Don't forget to save (Save config)! The emulator will then start in “ST Low” mode:

Feed the HATARI with a game

There are two ways to supply the HATARI with games: floppy disks (ST files) or on the hard disk! There are dozens of websites on the Internet where you can download thousands of games for the ATARI, some as ST files, some unpacked and ready to play. As an example, I'll mention one of my games from back then that I really enjoyed playing very often: KAISER! I have two disks of this game:

==> F12 ==> Floppy Disk ==> Browse ==> KaiserDisk 1

Now search for the directory in which you unpacked the two disks for Kaiser and click on the first disk. You do not need to restart the emulator, the diskette will be inserted in drive A immediately.

Double-click on drive A: and start LOADER.TOS

And lo and behold, if you have done everything right, KAISER starts

But be careful, because after a further loading time and various settings for the game, KAISER asks for the 2nd disk. So again:

==> F12 ==> Floppy Disk ==> Browse ==> KaiserDisk 2

Then click with the mouse in the emulator and the game will load the other data. After a short wait, you can get started and bathe in nostalgia:

Starting a game from the hard disk

Um, I assume I don't have to explain to you how to start a game from your hard disk? Well, I know how to do that:
